Surface tension is the force acting within the surface of a liquid, making the liquid to act like a stretched elastic skin.Surface tension is considered to be because of the forces of attraction between the molecules of the liquid.
APPLICATIONS OF THE EFFECTS OF SURFACE TENSION
- MATERIALS IN WATERPROOFS: Materials such as umbrella,raincoats are a very big example of application of surface tension. They are usually treated with oil based substances which prevents water from entering the materials. For instance ask yourself why is it that water does not enter inside an umbrella? Rain coats? Some will say it it because of the types of materials but that is not only the reason.
- SOAPS AND DETERGENTS CLEANING EFFECTS: Here is a quick one. Why do you find it hard to clean a dirty cloth with only water?It is because there is no soap or detergents. And why is the absence of detergents makes water not to be able to wash dirty cloths?it is because this detergents weakens the surface tension of water and makes and enables it to float away dirts from the particles being washed. What is Capillarity? Capillarity is the ability of a liquid to rise or fall in a narrow tube. Two terms used in explaining capillarity are Cohesion and Adhesion.
Cohesion is the force of attraction between molecules of the same kind, For example the molecules of water.
Adhesion is the force of attraction between molecules of different kinds,An example is the molecules of water and glass. Cohesion and adhesion explains the different action of water and mercury when spilled on a clean glass surface.
VISCOSITYViscosity simply means friction in fluids. Viscosity is the internal friction between layers of a liquid or gas in motion. To explain better i will use this terminology. Liquids which pour slowly are more viscous than liquids which pours faster.what that means is that palm oil is more viscous than water. Honey is more viscous than water too. Viscosity and friction have lots of similarities that sometimes it is confusing to differentiate between the too, So here are the similarities
1.Both depends on the nature of the material in contact
2.Both forces oppose motion
1.Friction occurs in solids while viscosity occurs in liquids
2.Friction is dependent on normal reactions,viscosity is not.
Applications of viscosity
Oils,Grease,and air are used as lubricants because of their viscosity and this prevents friction in machines.
