Most of you all want have been asking this question repeatedly so we have decided to treat it today. So lets get started. Carbon is a solid non metal. It is a member of the group five elements on the periodic table. It exhibits oxidation states of plus two and plus four in its compound. Carbon is very vast and a most important part of chemistry. It can be studied on its own which is organic chemistry. Carbon can exist in three forms namely Diamond, Graphite and Amorphous carbon. Each of them are called Allotropes of carbon. Allotrope in the sense that they consist of the same elements but different physical properties with respect to shape..
ALLOTROPES OF CARBON EXPLAINED IN FULL
1. DIAMOND: This is the most purest form of carbon. It is a colorless and lusterless solid which has the shape of an octahedron. Octal which means eight sided figure. The carbon atom was joined together by covalency. The covalent bond makes it hard and resistant to heat and chemical attacks. Do you know that carbon is the most hardest substance? oh yea it is and this is because of the covalent bond in them. Lets quickly move to Graphites
2. GRAPHITE: The carbon atoms in graphites are arranged in a hexagonal order.They are held together with vander waals force and this is a weak force

It is used as lubricants
It is used in paint manufacturing
It is used as electrodes in electrolysis
It conducts electricity
It writes well on paper
It is very soft and greasy
The third form of carbon is amorphous and they are wood animal charcoal sugar charcoal and lamp black. They are formed through heating carbon in a limited supply of air.. So lets explain all of them in details now.
- Animal charcoal: This is prepared by burning bones in limited supply of oxygen or air
- wood charcoal: They are prepared through burning of woods
- Sugar charcoal
USES OF AMORPHOUS CARBON
- Wood charcoal is used for absorbing gases
- Animal charcoal is used for decolouration of crude oil
- soot is used in the manufacture of printers ink and also used in the manufacture of polish
What are the properties of carbon? The properties includes
- They can form double or triple bonds
- They combine with elements
- They also reacts with oxidizing agents
